Jon Hamm’s acting career has seen him take on acclaimed roles on television and the big screen. But even award-winning actors appear in less than stellar projects. And in 2009, Hamm starred in one of his most forgettable films. Hardly anyone saw it in theaters, and critics who witnessed this box office flop agree that it wastes the actor’s talents.

The actor has achieved critical and commercial success

The most recognizable role in Jon Hamm’s oeuvre is the acclaimed drama series Mad Men. Hamm played the iconic Don Draper, a complicated creative director for an ad agency. According to the Television Academy, Hamm earned eight Emmy nominations and a win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in Mad Men.

He also found success on the big screen. His latest is one of the most successful films of the year. In Top Gun: Maverickwhich has grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office at the time of this writing, Hamm plays Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson.

Although several of his projects have come to fruition, those of 2009 Fly is by far Jon Hamm’s worst film.

In FlyJon Hamm plays Tom Adkins, a father investigating the disappearance of his son while uncovering answers to a 1958 missing person’s case. The film hovers between present day and the 1950s.

The murder mystery failed to impress critics, and it got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics point to the film’s overly serious tone as a factor preventing it from being enjoyable. The gap between the two periods is another target of criticism. This film essentially has two disjointed stories, and neither is handled particularly well.

But critical reception wasn’t the film’s worst: its box office numbers were abysmal. IMDb reports that Fly had an estimated budget of $2 million and only grossed $7,943 worldwide.

As unimpressive as Fly was, Hamm’s performance was not bad, according to reviews.

Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “A lead murder mystery with an awkward structure that hovers between 1958 and 2008, Fly wastes the talents of a reasonably good cast.

And Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News said: “No one is able to make much of the throwaway script, but Hamm is so limited by the trappings of the period that it seems he simply got the wrong set. “

Fly isn’t the only movie to earn a dreadful 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

For instance, Superbabies: genius babies 2 is a sequel that apparently nobody wanted, and the result was catastrophic. Clever babies tell unfunny jokes in this so-called comedy, unsurprisingly leaving critics impressed.

On the other end of the genre spectrum, mob dramas can be iconic. The Godfather and Freedmen are two of the best. But Gotti is the opposite. John Travolta stars in this 2018 crime drama as real-life mob boss John Gotti, and the actor’s performance and the film failed to impress.

Interestingly, Travolta also starred in two other films with 0% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. These are the 1983 Saturday night fever after, Stay aliveand the 1993 romantic comedy Look who’s talking nowwith Kirstie Alley.
