Munchen already in Hungary
Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg left the island of Malta, to the great disappointment of the local press –The Times of Malta wrote.
August. 10. 2005.
The internationally renown director spent the past two months shooting parts of his latest film on the Mediterranean island, and is already in Hungary. So far, the local coproduction partner has remained tightlipped, too.

The film by the working title Muenchen deals with the effects of the hostage tragedy at the 1972 Muenchen Olympic, when 11 Israeli athletes were murdered by Palestinian terrorists in Germany. The director intends  to voice strong criticism concerning the Israeli secret service Mossad.

Spielberg and his crew shot certain scenes that actually took place in Israel in Malta, since the island welcomed the crew and it appeared to be a safer and cheaper location than the Jewish state.

The Olympics of revenge

However, tight security measures were introduced during the shooting after a truck with its high-tech load to be used by the filmmakers was annihilated in a mysterious explosion.

As a result, Spielberg decided to shun the press. So far, they only released censored material to the press, but a member of the crew leaked information anbout the story line to Israeli papers.

and Spielberg in Malta

So far, Spielberg and his crew have been mean to the local press, too.  The local coproduction partner is not saying anything, so it’s not public yet how many of the actors are here and whether there will be tight security measures introduced here as well.
