The modification of the Film Law approved by the Parliament on February 13 entered into force on April 1.
April. 14. 2006.

The motion picture legislation passed by a unanimous vote in 2004 was modified in areas including film rights, incompatibility regulations, the activities of the
Film Office, the coproduction score system and the maximum amount of state support for films.
The modification was necessary because of the professional experiences of the past 18 months, further legal harmonization with the European Union and problems concerning professional incompatibility issues.
One of the most important changes concerns the classification of Hungarian participation in films. The category other cinematic work has been established, that is how films where Hungarian participation does not reach 15 points are classified. The determination of the size of state support has become more complex: it has decreased from the earlier 80% to 50% of the budget, at the same time, the circle of those entitled to a larger proportion of support has been defined more precisely. Films that cost no more than Ft 50 million and cannot be financed in any other way may receive 100% support. In case of Hungarian language productions the proportion may reach 90% in case the budget does not exceed 500 million. The film may also obtain the 90% support if it is unlikely to return the investment but it has a significant cultural value. Foreign language productions that constibute to making Hungarian culture more popular abroad may receive 70% support.
Another important modification attempts to regulate the issue of incompatibility. A change introduced concerning the Film Office is that the number of the members of the Age Rating Committee will increase from 5 to 7.
The regulations concerning film archives and film rights have also been modified, but these entered into force on the 8th day after the changes have been published in the official gazette.
The modifications will soon be available in English as well.
